Styling a Poncho Sweater

Styling a poncho sweater . . .

Here are three tips to help you wear and re-wear this season’s coziest trend.

Start with really good basics.

I recently discovered two pieces I’ll be wearing straight through fall and well into winter. These long sleeve tees are both flattering and functional. They come in four colors–I purchased one of each because they pair perfectly with leggings. Cue my second great discovery, this super opaque style. These leggings are made with a thicker, more substantial material that is perfect for chillier weather.

Let your poncho make the statement.

When I’m styling a poncho (be it solid or printed), I like to keep the rest of my outfit more muted. Black leggings are the easiest place to start. By pairing them with a black heeled boot, your legs look longer and leaner. Plus, neutral stems let the poncho do all the talking.

Add minimal accessories.

Accessorizing a poncho can be tricky. Chunky necklaces or oversized earrings can add too much weight to the top half of your outfit. I like to stick with daintier jewelry like stud earrings and a long, layered gold necklace. If you’re a bracelet girl, simply add a stack of coordinating bangles or a trendy gold cuff. Less is more, especially when it comes to finding pieces to tie it all together.
