Hair Care Secrets: Shampoo 101

If you’ve ever spent some time on the haircare aisle, you’ve probably noticed all the different shampoos. It feels like there are SO MANY options–so many formulas to help cure your haircare woes. Thankfully, I’ve already done the dirty work, researched key words and made a list of common shampoo claims. Before you buy and try that new product, here are a few things to consider:
Volumizing + Thickening for Fine Hair
My hair is on the finer side, so I prefer shampoo that gives my roots some lift. This volumizing formula by Moroccanoil tends to do the trick. It’s sulfate-free and made with shine-inducing argan oil. Added bonus: it comes in a 2.4 oz. bottle, AKA the ideal size to test and try.
Clarifying for Extra Oily/Dirty Hair
Opinions are mixed when it comes to clarifying formulas because they tend to be more abrasive than your average shampoo. For example, they’ve been known to strip color treated hair. But, if you feel like you have a lot of buildup, mix in a clarifying shampoo 1-2x per month.
Smoothing + Enhancing for Textured Hair
Have textured hair? Stylists recommend washing less than the average Jane (only a couple times a week). When you do shampoo, go with a specialty formula designated to your specific style–be it curly, natural or just frizz prone. They are made with proteins specific to your needs.
Strengthening for Damaged Hair
Regular use of hot tools can quickly damage your hair. To combat these effects, I recommend using a restructuring shampoo like this one by Aveda or this similar formula by Phyto. Both shampoos are plant-based and deeply moisturize your dried out hair.
Protecting for Color Treated Hair
Stylists recommend washing colored hair only three times a week with a formula that is sulfate-free. Color-treated shampoos also contain a UV filter that acts as a sun protectant for your hair. These ingredients ensure that your color stays vibrant for as long as possible.
